Leader During the Holidays

The end of the year holidays are also the best time to acknowledge your employees’ hard work throughout the year and prove to them that they are valued members of your business.  The following are five simple strategies that you can put into place to make sure this message is relayed effectively:

  1. Spend some quality time with each of them. Take a few minutes privately with each employee to check in on their lives.  Ask them for feedback on areas that need improvement.  Find out what they enjoy about their work and what types of goals they have set for themselves for the upcoming new year. Spending a few minutes connecting with each of them on a personal level will build trust and provide valuable insight.
  1. Be authentic.  If you’re having a stressful week, share this with them when they ask how things are going in passing, but avoid letting stress turn you into the Grinch.  Let them know you are human and are feeling the busyness and distraction of the holiday season, as well. Relating to your employees in this way can result in feelings of safety and loyalty in return.
  1. Show true appreciation.  Take the time to select gifts that reflect how much you truly appreciate each and every one of them. Offer praise and show specific gratitude that is heartfelt and meaningful.
  1. Have real expectations.  It’s important not to stretch yourself too thin, and the same goes for your employees.  Be realistic and help your team focus on key priorities, navigating unanticipated issues that come up with the holiday time constraints.
  1. Be a role model.  Model the right behavior with time spent at the office.  Pitch in to help with heavy workloads so that everyone can take off a little bit earlier at the end of a week or on a day before a holiday.  Show that you are a team player, and your team will play hard for you.

Successfully leading  your team during the holidays is crucial to reaching your company’s end of year income goals. The busy time of year provides wonderful opportunities to strengthen your team and prepare for an increase in profit in the upcoming new year.
